You have the task of designing a booklet, so what do you do?
Book printing is a form of marketing that doesn’t seem to be as prevalent as other styles, such as posters, flyers, or brochures. Because of this it isn’t as well known what a booklet is meant to accomplish and how you should go about making one yourself.
The good news is that from a design standpoint a booklet is one of the easier kinds of advertisements you can make. While it can be similar to some brochure designs in some of the layout, your use of pictures is likely going to be much lower than a brochure with a much stronger emphasis on the words.
Any standard program, such as Adobe Photoshop, should be capable of producing the needed template for a great booklet with much less design experience than your typical advertisement.
However, that does mean you have a much stronger emphasis on the writing itself, so if you aren’t as good in that area a booklet might not be best for you, but let’s assume you can write well enough to churn one out.
So what do you write about?
Most printed booklets deal with one specific subject matter pertaining to an industry. What that subject is will be based on what you know enough about to write a booklet on. The kind of subject can vary widely, but they are typically centered on some fact most people wouldn’t know as much about.
The point with a booklet is to educate people about you and your industry in order to make them feel safer doing business with you. There are plenty of jobs out there that the average person just doesn’t know very much about, even if they’ll eventually need to hire someone doing that job.
This is why booklets came into prominence to begin with. It provides the perfect opportunity to educate people about your industry. Now, you don’t want to get too obscure with the kinds of references you’re using or else you might risk getting blank stares in return for your efforts.
Your job isn’t to educate them so thoroughly they could do the job themselves, because most people don’t want to learn so much about an industry that they could do it themselves. Your point is to give them all of the basic details coupled with how this applies to them and how you can help them out.
This is, after all, a form of advertising, even if it is a little more indirect compared to the other styles.
Booklets aren’t always the easiest thing to write. They might not be incredibly long, but when compared to most advertising, it requires a lot more writing than you might be used to. If writing isn’t your thing, than booklet printing probably wouldn’t be either, but if you find yourself gravitating more towards writing than designing, the booklet could be the perfect way to let people get to know you.
